Well folks…I have taken off quite some time writing–not only writing about music, but writing about anything . Soon after I got started on this blog, life hit me hard. I had to finish a thesis, find a job, move to another area of the state, get married, find another job, and then…..(my mind is whirling at the moment)….. find an extra job to help pay off school loans, and then I had to find a job as an adjunct instructor to actually do something that I had a passion for…..unfortunately, I have been working 16 hour days as case manager for foster care kids which can be rewarding but time-consuming. And the pay is salary—which means I work for Chinese wages (thanks Jason H.)…so, my time with music has been spent listening to whatever I could get my hands on in my car. Fortunately, I am blessed to have the internet on my android phone, and I have been listening to indie music across the land once again. I have even been trying to dust off the old guitar in the corner of the basement…..hopefully soon these busy days will begin to lessen…..
Regardless of my shortcomings that many others would consider blessings, I have been able to check out a few indie bands to look out for in 2011—The Pass from Louisville, KY is quite a treat, and although I am not a huge fan of the dance/trance electronic mix included into the buzz of heavy guitars and electronic beats, it is what it is—good. I found myself enthralled into the patterns and beat—a far cry from the sounds of My Morning Jacket. The psychedelic feel is hypnotic, almost like early Killers meets New Order meets Local Natives. You get the picture.
Also, check out the Austin, Texas based indie rock band “Watch out for Rockets.” When I first heard the name, I felt bad about confusing the name with “Love and Rockets.” But, the similarity was correct on some accounts, partly because the band made me think of the Beatles thrown in with late ‘80s British Pop (Housemartins, Stone Roses, Jesus and Mary Chain, Echo and the Bunnymen, maybe Blur). So what? They’re a good band, and their blend of late ‘60s Beatles and late ‘80s indie and British pop with today’s indie feel is well done, and their latest praise is well deserved.
Anyway, take it for its worth—I’ll be checking out some new and old stuff and throwing out some words of wisdom to y’ all—and I will be checking out upcoming shows in the southeast and looking around the local scene….and you may find me attempting to play a banjo with Sam Wagner of local Knoxville fame……..
